BACKGROUND

Equality Arizona, Stonewall Democrats, Log Cabin Republicans and HRC have formed a coalition to collaborate on a cooperative political agenda to further the rights of the LGBT community in Arizona.   The Coalition will work together at the state and local level on issues important to the LGBT community and will support federal, state and local fair minded candidates supportive of the community’s rights, utilizing each organizations resources and volunteers and will recruit and work with volunteers from around the state interested in supporting the work of the Coalition.  In 2010, this work will concentrate on five major areas:

  • State and Local Advocacy
    • Lobby training and Lobby Day at State Capitol in March
    • Monitoring of pro- and anti-LGBT legislation introduced in the State Legislature
    • Working with local municipalities and counties to introduce and pass antidiscrimination, domestic partner benefit, and domestic partner registry policies; as well as promotion of Coming Out Day proclamations

  • Voter Registration, Permanent Early Voter List, and Get Out the Vote
    • Work in partnership with statewide progressive organizations already undertaking these efforts
    • Work in the LGBT community to promote PEVL

  • Education and Outreach
    • Organize Camp Equality volunteer campaign training events in Tucson, Flagstaff, Yuma and Phoenix in March and April. 50-100 campers expected at each camp.
    • Mobilize trained volunteers to fair minded candidate campaigns
    • Reach out to Hispanic, African American, Native American, and Faith communities to gain support for LGBT issues, promote voter registration and GOTV efforts

  • Candidate Support and Fundraising
    • Develop targeted candidate list in partnership with the State Party and mobilize trained volunteers for these campaigns
    • Organize fundraisers and campaign appeals in the LGBT community for targeted candidates

  • Develop and Implement Earned Media campaign
    • Meet with Editorial Boards to educate and promote LGBT issues
    • Promote campaign to develop Letters to the Editor and other positive news media on issues important to the LGBT community
    • Develop website resources to enable community members to participate
